Island: Pigadia (or Karpathos) has been the capital of the island since 1892. Pigadia is the main port of the island of Karpathos and is located on the southeast side of the island, in the Gulf of Vrontis. The Wells are built on the same site as the ancient Greek city of Poseidion. Karpathos is the second largest island of the Greek island complex of the Dodecanese (after Rhodes). It has an area of 302,152 sq km, a coastline of 160 km and a total population of 6,416 inhabitants. It is a rich habitat and for this reason, it has protected areas, where species of fauna and flora, important for the ecosystem, live that are threatened with extinction. The rocky but formerly green island is characterized by its high mountain peaks, which reach 1,215 meters. Cape Kastellos is the southernmost point of the island. It still maintains moderately dense and sparser pine forests in the north and in the central west of the island. Small coves and beaches with crystal clear waters are formed along the entire eastern side of the island and most of them are easily accessible, either via the paved road network or by excursion boats from the town of Karpathos. Some of them have been awarded the honorary blue flag, due to their safety, organization, and cleanliness. There are also unknown and rugged shores, reached by paths that pass-through pines and springs. There are also caves with stalactites and stalagmites mainly in the centre of the island. To the north of the island stretches the islet of Saria. In Karpathos, there are two Protected Areas that are part of the Natura 2000 Network. The first is the Protected Area “North Karpathos and Saria and Coastal Marine Zone” where it is designated as a Special Protection Zone for birds and as a Special Conservation Zone for habitats. There are 21 types of habitats and 49 species of flora and fauna in N. Karpathos and Saria and the Coastal Sea zone. Second is the Protected Area “Central Karpathos: Kali Limni – Lastos – Kyra Panagia and Coastal Marine Zone” which is designated as a Special Conservation Zone for the habitats. In the Central Karpathos Protected Area, there are 18 types of habitats and 2 species of flora and fauna.

History: Karpathos is an island with a rich history that stretches from antiquity to modern times. It is the mythological homeland of the Titan Iapetus and the birthplace of Proteus, who was its first king and the birthplace of the Goddess Athena. Prometheus also lived part of his life in Karpathos. The island of Karpathos was connected to the island of Rhodes in both ancient and medieval times. In the early Christian years, a large number of bishops were recorded in Karpathos. In the 14th century, it entered the Latin church and became a seat. Latin Karpathos is still recorded today by the Catholic Church as the seat of an Archbishop. In the Middle Ages, the island was called Scarpanto in Venetian and Kerpe in Turkish. In 1912, it was occupied militarily by the Italians and became part of the Overseas Possession of the Italian Islands of the Aegean. Freedom came to Karpathos earlier than the rest of the Dodecanese, on October 5, 1944, however, the official Incorporation into the Greek state took place on March 7, 1948, along with the rest of the Dodecanese.

Sights: The most visited destination in Karpathos is, by common confession, the medieval village of Olympos in the North of the island. Some of the 18 early Christian basilicas of the island are worth visiting, such as Agia Anastasia in Arkasa and Agia Fotini in the town of Karpathos. Important sights are also the ruins of the ancient city of Vrykuntos in the north of the island, the ruins of ancient Arkasia in Paleokastro of Arkasa, as well as the Castle and the ancient citadel of the city of Karpathos in Aperi. In Lefko (30 km from the city), there is a Roman reservoir and archaeological ruins. In the city of Karpathos and in Arkasa there are ancient chambered tombs, a sample of which is in the Archaeological Museum of Karpathos. There are also traditional windmills and traditional buildings scattered throughout the island.
