Mytilene, officially recognised as a Bike Friendly Destination, is making another strategic step towards promoting micromobility and sustainable tourism development through the launch of a modern public electric bike-sharing system.

Launch & Infrastructure
As of August 1, 2025, the city’s public electric bicycle service is fully operational and available to both residents and visitors, offering two hours of free use per ride. The bicycles can be picked up and returned at charging stations located across the city:
- Sappho Square
- Port of Mytilene
- Town Hall (parking area)
- Milena Kontou Square
- Ano Skala Park (near the Health Center)
- Kallithea (near schools and student dormitories)
- University Hill (serving students and staff of the University of the Aegean)
In the coming months, the city’s cycling network will be further enhanced through targeted interventions, including the redevelopment of the waterfront, feasibility studies for expanding bike lanes, and the creation of new recreational routes.

User Guidelines & Requirements
To use the bike-sharing system, users must download the dedicated mobile app (available for Android and iOS), create an account using their phone number, and provide a payment method (debit or credit card) in case usage exceeds the free 2-hour limit.
- Use of the service is strictly limited to individuals aged 18 and above.
- All rides must comply with traffic safety regulations and the Greek Highway Code.

Bike Friendly Certification & Sustainable Approach
Mytilene’s inclusion in the Bike Friendly Destination network was officially announced around the same time the e-bike sharing system was launched. The certification process and the installation of the new mobility infrastructure were actively supported by the Lesvos Cycling Association, a key local stakeholder in promoting sustainable transport.
The certification recognises a range of meaningful actions by the Municipality, including:
- Development of digital cycling maps and suggested bike routes
- Establishment of an automated e-bike rental system, alongside partnerships with local companies offering all types of bike rentals, technical support, and guided tours
- Collaboration with local businesses and the cycling community to host year-round cycling events
- Creation of dedicated cycling infrastructure (bike lanes, signage, parking), and active engagement of public and private actors to serve cycling visitors
Strategic Vision: Green Mobility & Tourism
Mayor Panagiotis Christofas underlined that the new e-bike sharing system is a decisive step toward strengthening micromobility and sustainable urban transportation in Mytilene.
According to the Lesvos Cycling Association, the initiative contributes to the vision of a city with fewer cars, cleaner air, and more accessible public spaces — making Mytilene a more liveable and environmentally friendly destination.

Outlook & Conclusion
The launch of the public electric bike system in Mytilene:
- Promotes an eco-conscious, safe, and modern way of moving through the city
- Strengthens cycling tourism and quality urban mobility solutions
- Aligns with the strategic goal of sustainable tourism development
- Highlights the Municipality’s commitment to accessibility, environmental responsibility, and authentic visitor experiences
Combined with infrastructure projects and the involvement of local stakeholders, this initiative positions Mytilene as a model for sustainable urban transport and tourism innovation.
